Bulgogi (Korean BBQ Beef)

Ingredients

  • 450 g top sirloin (~1lb)
  • 1 Korean pear peeled and grated
  • 1 small yellow onion thinly sliced
  • 2 stalks green onion thinly sliced
  • 1/2 large carrot* julienned
  • 5~6 tbsp light soy sauce
  • 3 tbsp mirin
  • 2 tbsp maple syrup or brown sugar/honey
  • 2 tsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp white pepper
  • 3~4 cloves garlic crushed
  • 1 tsp ginger minced
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil

Instructions

  • Prepare beef by slicing thinly.
  • Combine all ingredients and let marinade overnight (or at least an hour)**.
  • Heat skillet*** on medium high heat. Add oil and spread around pan. Shake off the excess marinade on the beef (use chopsticks or tongs) and cook for 3~4 min. Note that it is very thin so it will cook quickly.
  • Enjoy! Serve with rice, ssamjang, kimchi, perilla leaves, lettuce, etc. anything you want!!

Notes

* Do not add carrot if you're making to use in bibimbap since that recipe requires cooking carrots on the side. You can see that there are no carrots in the pictures I posted because I was cooking this for it.
** I used a ziplock in this photo but I've started to use reusable silicon bags to marinade food. I encourage the use of these or in a closed glass container.
*** Use either a cast iron skillet or a non stick pan. Don't use a pan that you know burns food easily.
